Dove Hunting Gear Guide
Your Comprehensive Guide to Dove Hunting in Argentina: Must-Have Gear and Tips
Argentina is renowned for its exceptional dove hunting, offering sportsmen the opportunity to experience some of the best wing shooting in the world. If you're planning a trip to Argentina for dove hunting, it's crucial to come prepared with the right gear to ensure a successful and enjoyable adventure. To help you we've created a Dove Hunting Essentials section on our website bringing together many of the most popular items items you'll want to consider as you prepare.
Highlighted below is a more detailed guide on what gear you’ll want to consider to make the most of your trip.
Firearms & Ammunition
Shotgun: The cornerstone of any dove hunting trip is a reliable shotgun. For Argentina's high-volume shooting, a 20-gauge or 28-gauge shotgun is ideal. Semi-automatic shotguns are particularly popular due to their ease of use and quicker follow-up shots, which can be crucial given the fast-paced nature of dove hunting. Renting your shotgun from your outfitter is most likely the most cost effective and hassle-free choice. Due to the increases in registering foreign firearms and additional hassles upon arrival, there is little cost savings in bringing your own shotgun. Left-handed shotguns can be difficult to find in Argentina. If you shoot left -handed or with a particular custom setup, you should consider bringing your own firearm. Your outfitter can help guide you thought the details of that process.
Ammunition: Prepare to go through a substantial amount of ammunition (and money to pay for it). It's not uncommon for hunters to shoot hundreds or even thousands of rounds in a single day. You won’t be able to bring shells into Argentina and most outfitters provide ammunition as part of their packages requiring you to purchase directly from them. It can get pricey, but is the easiest option.
Clothing
Comfortable Clothing: Layering is essential to adapt to varying temperatures throughout the day. Depending on the time of year, a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a camo outer layer will provide flexibility. During the early morning or late evening hunts, it can get chilly, so packing a light jacket or vest is beneficial.
We offer a variety of shooting shirts that have been extremely popular for dove hunting, with the receommended including:
> ShockEater Eco-Elite Shooting Shirt (Brown)
> ShockEater Performance Hunting Shirts - Short & Long Sleeve (Realtree EDGE® Camo)
> ShockEater Performance Shooting Shirts (Military Green or Grey)
Each of these shirts provides a built-in pocket to accommodate the ShockEater Recoil Pad for a simple and easy way to save your shoulder. We generally see most folks purchase a minimum of (2) shirts so that they have the flexibility to not wear the same shirt every day and avoid having to do laundry each day of the trip.
Camo Gear: Doves have exceptional eyesight, making earth tones or camo clothing a necessity. If opting for camo, choose patterns that blend into the Argentine landscape, such as brush or woodland patterns. Lightweight, breathable fabrics will keep you comfortable in the often-warm climate. Though many patterns will suffice, we’ve gravitated to the Realtree patterns and offer many complementary items to look and feel your best on the hunt.
Recoil Protection
Recoil Pad: With the high volume of shooting, managing recoil becomes crucial to prevent shoulder fatigue and bruising. A quality recoil pad can absorb the shock, protect yourself from abrasion caused by repetitive mounting, and make shooting more comfortable. Our Flagship product, the ShockEater Recoil Pad, quickly became a “must-have” staple for dove hunting due to its recoil absorbing properties as well as the slim and unobtrusive form. It is a high-performing and unassuming item that will keep you focused on the birds and not on your shoulder. The recoil pad is sold separately from our shirts, fits in the internal pocket of all of our shooting shirts, vests, and garments; as well as garments from many other manufacturers. You can learn more about which brands are currently compatible on our compatibility page.
Slip-on Recoil Pad (optional): As a secondary option, slip-on recoil pads are another a convenient choice and can be easily added to most shotguns. Our neoprene Slip-on Recoil Pad Kits provide a simple and effective way to mitigate the effects of recoil from repetitive shots and provide the flexibility to customize the L.O.P. when necessary. This is helpful when renting guns from your outfitter and looking to ensure proper gun fit.
Footwear
Lightweight Boots: Sturdy, comfortable, hunting boots can be a great ally in navigating the often rugged and uneven terrain. Waterproof boots can be particularly beneficial if you're hunting in wetter conditions. For others, simple ankle-height footwear will fit the bill. If protective and comfortable, many shooters even wear sneakers… personal preference wins out here.
Socks: Don't overlook the importance of good socks. Moisture-wicking, cushioned socks can make a significant difference in comfort, especially during long days in the field.
Accessories
Hat / Head Protection: A camo hat or cap not only helps you blend into your surroundings, but also shields you from the scorching South American sun and reduces glare while shooting. This is one you don't want to forget. We have a number of suitable options available that complement the camo patterns of our performance hunting shirts making them a great items to toss in your bag.
Shooting Glasses: Protect your eyes from the sun and flying debris with quality shooting glasses. Lenses in yellow or orange can enhance contrast and visibility, making it easier to track doves against various backgrounds.
Hearing Protection: Given the high volume of shooting, hearing protection is vital. Foam earplugs will be perfectly fine to get the job done, though some opt for electronic earmuffs to amplify ambient sounds while protecting your ears from gunshots. Again, personal preference comes in to play on this one.
Shooting Gloves: Gloves will protect your hands from blisters and provide a better grip on your firearm. Look for gloves that offer both protection and dexterity, allowing you to handle your shotgun efficiently. While we recommend and stock the Wild Hare Shooting Gloves for their comfort and durability. Many have also found FootJoy Rain Grip golf gloves to be an effective alternative.
Shooting Vest (optional): A shooting vest with ample pockets for shells and other accessories will keep your gear organized and within easy reach. If you’re considering this route, look for vests with breathable mesh panels to keep you cool in warmer weather such as our best-selling Wild Have Heatwave Mesh Vest.
Shooting Pouch / Game Belt (optional): Alternatively, a side carry shooting pouch can be very handy for shells. It may be unnecessary if bird boys are loading for you, but ensure you check with your outfitter to understand your options. If you’re going this route, check out the Wild Hare Divided Shell Pouch or Peregrine Game Belt as suitable options.
Cooler (optional): A small cooler for drinks and snacks is essential to keep you hydrated and energized throughout the day. Many hunting lodges provide coolers, but check with your outfitter to be sure. Having a personal one can be convenient, but may be unnecessary depending on what your package provides.
Miscellaneous Gear
Sunscreen and Insect Repellent: The Argentine sun can be intense, and bugs can be a nuisance, especially in the warmer months. Protect your skin with a high-SPF sunscreen and use insect repellent to keep the bugs at bay. Products containing DEET or Picaridin are effective choices. Don’t forget Lip Balm!
First Aid Kit / Medications: Accidents can happen, so it's wise to have a basic first aid kit on hand for minor injuries. Include items like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications.
Power Adapters: All the electricity in Argentina is 220V. Check that your lodge provides 110V adapters or bring your own to be safe. It’s unlikely that will be available at many hotels and airports and they will be necessary to charge laptops, phone, shavers, etc.
Camera: You’re about to embark on the trip of a lifetime – don’t forget to capture the memories of your hunt with a good-quality camera or smartphone! Consider bringing extra batteries or a portable charger to ensure you don't miss any shots.
Travel Info & Documentation
Hunting License and Permits: Ensure you have all the necessary licenses and permits for hunting in Argentina. These are typically arranged through your hunting outfitter, but it's important to verify everything is in order before your trip.
Passport and Visa: Verify that your passport is up-to-date and check if you need a visa to enter Argentina. Make copies of important documents and keep them in a separate place from the originals.
Travel Insurance: Consider travel insurance that covers hunting activities. It can provide peace of mind in case of unforeseen circumstances, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.
